European Body & Paint · San Francisco

European Auto Body in San Francisco.

BMW · Mercedes-Benz · Audi · Porsche · Volkswagen · Volvo. Body and paint work on European imports — the bulk of what rolls into this shop in the Marina. Factory paint match, insurance handled, lifetime warranty on the work.

Written by Jack Chew, owner of Lombard Auto Body — body and paint work on European vehicles on Lombard Street since 2013. Reviewed June 2026.

Why most of our work is European

Lombard at Pierce sits at the edge of the Marina, Cow Hollow, and Pacific Heights — neighborhoods where the parc skews heavy German. BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Porsche, VW, Volvo. Most weeks we have at least one in the shop for body or paint.

After 13 years on the block we know the recurring issues by model: fender liner clips on BMWs that crack at the slightest wheel impact, aluminum hoods on Audis and newer Mercedes that dent differently from steel, plastic bumper-cover attachment tabs on Porsche Macans that snap if a tow truck operator gets impatient, Volvo XC-series rear-quarter aluminum sections that have to be drilled with the right pull-out technique.

It's not magic. It's volume — the more of one type of car you see, the better you get at it.

What we handle — and what we send out

Being an independent shop means being honest about scope. Here's the breakdown.

We do

  • Collision and panel repair on BMW 3/4/5/7-series, X-series
  • Mercedes C/E/S, GLA/GLC/GLE/GLS
  • Audi A3/A4/A6, Q3/Q5/Q7
  • Porsche Cayenne, Macan, Panamera
  • VW Golf, Tiguan, Atlas, Jetta, Passat
  • Volvo XC60, XC90, S60, V60
  • Steel and standard-aluminum panel work
  • Paintless dent repair (PDR) for door dings and hail where the paint is intact
  • Factory paint match, acoustic-laminated glass, HUD windshields with ADAS calibration

We'll refer you out

  • Newer Tesla aluminum structural collision (Tesla Approved Body shops have the right rivet/bonding equipment)
  • BMW i-series carbon-core structural jobs (BMW Certified Collision required)
  • Porsche 911 structural / aluminum-intensive frame work
  • Mercedes-AMG structural collision (Star Repair certified)
  • Rivian / Lucid (manufacturer-specific certification required)
  • Heavy mechanical work (transmission overhaul, engine rebuild)

If your job falls in the "refer out" column, we'll name the right shop in SF and let you decide. We don't take work we shouldn't.

Common European-auto questions

Do you work on BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and Porsche?

Yes — European auto body and refinishing is a significant share of our work after 13 years in the Marina District. The Marina, Cow Hollow, and Pacific Heights parc skews heavily toward German imports, so most weeks we have at least one BMW, Mercedes, or Audi in the shop for body or paint work.

Are you OEM-certified by BMW or Mercedes-Benz?

No — and we want to be straightforward about that. OEM body certifications (BMW Certified Collision, Mercedes-Benz Star Repair, Tesla Approved Body) require manufacturer-specific equipment, training, and ongoing fees. Some of our larger competitors (Chilton, Alioto's) carry several. As an independent neighborhood shop, the math doesn't work for us to chase those certs — but we handle most European body and paint work that doesn't require manufacturer-proprietary structural procedures. If your job does require OEM cert (newer Tesla aluminum structure, certain BMW carbon-core jobs), we'll name the right shop.

Will using a non-OEM-certified shop void my warranty?

No — under the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, a manufacturer cannot void your warranty just because you used an independent shop for repair. They can void coverage for the specific component improperly repaired, but they cannot blanket-void the whole vehicle warranty. For collision and body work outside the powertrain, this is almost never a real issue.

Why does European auto body cost more than domestic or Asian-import work?

Three reasons: parts cost (OEM panels and trim run 1.5–3× equivalent Asian or domestic parts), finish complexity (more tri-coat, pearl, and acoustic-laminated glass), and labor time (European trim removal and reassembly is typically slower because of tighter tolerances and more sensors). Expect roughly 20–35% higher cost than a similar-scope job on a Toyota or Honda.

Will your paint match factory BMW Individual / Mercedes Designo / Porsche custom colors?

Yes — for production colors. We match off the VIN paint code, verify against the adjacent panel for sun-fade, and blend into the neighboring panels so the repair is invisible. For rare or limited-run colors (BMW Individual Frozen finishes, Porsche PTS custom colors), we may need to special-order paint matched off your specific vehicle's ID, which adds 3–7 business days and modest cost. Ask at the estimate.

My BMW has acoustic-laminated windshield with HUD. Can you replace it?

Yes — we use OEM or OEM-equivalent acoustic-laminated glass for HUD-equipped vehicles, and we handle the ADAS camera recalibration after install. HUD windshields are a separate part number from standard, more expensive, and longer to source — expect $1,200–$2,500 for the windshield + calibration on a typical newer BMW or Mercedes.

Do you work on Volkswagens and Volvos?

Yes — VW, Volvo, and most other European imports. Volvo body work in particular is straightforward; VW is what we cut our teeth on. Volvo XC60s and XC90s, Golfs, Tiguans, Atlases, S60s — all routine.
